![]() I just don’t think Kobo is that competent when it comes to listening to their customers and giving them the software changes they want. As far as I can tell, the overwhelming majority of people on the MobileRead forums would prefer they made it an option, even if they actually like having it there. I really don’t know why Kobo doesn’t simply make the bottom bar optional. The two most important things are adding the extra code in the CSS box and checking to remove spaces between paragraphs.įiled Under: How To, Kobo Tagged With: kobo aura hd, kobo glo, kobo mini Some of these settings aren’t needed depending on how the ebook is originally formatted. – You can choose to set default line spacing to 0% and margins to 0 pt as well. ![]() – There’s also the option to remove existing CSS properties for fonts, margins, and padding under “Filter Style Information”. – You can check the box to remove spaces between paragraphs too. Enter the following code into the Extra CSS box: – After importing the ebooks into Calibre, select the ones you want to modify and choose “Convert books”. You can also easily remove the DRM if you choose to make it so you can read your ebooks on other ereaders and apps. If you want to convert purchased ebooks from Kobo you’ll have to login to your account and download the copies first, which requires using Adobe Digital Editions, and then import them into Calibre to convert them. If you are converting regular DRM-free ePubs all you have to do is import them and follow the directions below. You can use Calibre’s conversion feature to change the CSS settings in an ebook. Here’s the procedure below, and here’s the link to some pictures showing the settings in Calibre if you need a visual. Kobo Formatting Tip: Minimizing Wasted SpaceĪwhile back a reader named Evenft left a comment about what settings to use with Calibre to minimize wasted space. You can even get rid of the entire big bar of wasted space at the top of the screen (unless you are running firmware version 2.5.2). With the proper settings you can easily minimize wasted space and remove spaces between paragraphs. Luckily, there’s a great free ebook tool called Calibre that you can use to re-format your ebooks to have more control over formatting. In fact I can’t think of an ebook reader or app that annoys me more than Kobo’s software. The irony is that Kobo’s ereaders offer more layout and font adjusting options than any other brand, but when it comes right down to it there are too many limitations and variables to make good use of the settings. That would slow things down. And don’t get me started on how much I hate the long paragraph bug that makes it so there’s even more wasted space at the bottom of the page for certain books and fonts. Or if the device was being mounted as a USB1 device instead of USB2. A virus/malware scanner would be the obvious thing. The only other things I can think of is if something else is access the device at the same time. That also has a compress option which will reorganise the database and can help performance. If you have my Kobo Utilities plugin installed, you can check the database with it. But, usually if it is bad enough to cause performance problems, it will raise an error when calibre is accessing it. It is possible the issue is the database on the device. That was because it removed a lot of collections. I did change the collections management settings last night and the next connect on the Glo HD took about 8 minutes in the "Sending metadata to device" job. ![]() It will take longer if there are a lot of changes in the collections of series. ![]() I have had reason to connect with the metadata.calibre, and that was still less than five minutes. For the record, my Glo HD takes less than 2 minutes with nearly 5000 books. It will be longer if the metadata.calibre file is missing or damaged, but still under 10 minutes. And calibre should be able to fetch that number of books in less than a minute. Less than 2000 books, probably less than 1000. How many books are on the device? With 1.5GB used, I wouldn't expect that many. My old Sony reader had the same items on it and it took less than a minute to read what books are on the device. Onboard storage is 5.2 GB of 6.7 available. When I try to sync with Calibre it takes between 20 an d30 minutes to read what books are on the device. ![]()
